Ruptured air sac in young chicks

Ruptured air sac, also known as subcutaneous emphysema, happens when air escapes from a chick’s respiratory system and gets trapped under the skin. This can be caused by injury, rough handling, or, in some cases, a natural weakness in the air sac system. It usually appears as a soft, balloon-like swelling under the skin, often around the neck, chest, or wings.

In most cases, it resolves on its own within a few days. However, if the chick seems uncomfortable or the swelling grows rapidly, you can gently release the trapped air using a clean needle and monitor the chick’s recovery.
